Man sentenced in Grand Forks, N.D., fire caused by cooking meth

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- An East Grand Forks, Minn., man has been sentenced to three years in prison and 10 years of supervised probation in a November fire that destroyed a duplex in neighboring Grand Forks, N.D.

Twenty-year-old Derik Ostlund earlier pleaded guilty to making methamphetamine and reckless endangerment. Charges of theft and drug paraphernalia possession were dropped.

Ostlund and his girlfriend, 33-year-old Candy Reed, were accused of cooking and smoking meth in an apartment in the duplex, leading to the blaze. No one was seriously injured, but nine people were left without homes.

Reed was sentenced in April to four years in prison and four years of supervised probation.

Roxanne Halvorson, Ostlund's aunt who lived at the duplex with her children, also has pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced June 16.
