Man killed, two others injured, in crash north of Squaw Lake
A Golden Valley man died in a single-vehicle crash reported shortly after 4 p.m. Monday north of Squaw Lake. Two other occupants were injured.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol out of Virginia:
A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Mark Heimer, 48, of White Bear Lake, Minn., was headed south on Highway 46 about 3 miles north of Squaw Lake in Itasca County when the driver fell asleep. The vehicle crossed over the northbound lane and went into the opposite ditch, striking some trees.
One of the passengers, Keith Heimer, 56, of Golden Valley, was declared dead at the scene. He was taken to Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Mark Heimer and a second passenger, Rhett Witschen, 32, of Eagan, Minn., were both treated and released at Deer River Healthcare Center for cuts and bruises.
Mark Heimer was the only one of the three occupants who was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The vehicle was totaled.
