Man drowns in Hubbard County lake
BEMIDJI -- A 78-year-old man died in a suspected drowning Thursday evening on LaSalle Lake in northern Hubbard County.
At 7 p.m., the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office received a report of a potential drowning at the LaSalle Lake State Recreation Area, which is west of Becida, according to a release from the sheriff's office. When deputies and emergency personnel arrived at the public access, they met with several people reporting that while they were swimming a member of their group went under water about 20 feet past the dock and did not resurface.
Emergency personnel and a private citizen in boat began searching the area and located a body with an underwater camera in about 20 feet of water. At 9:15 p.m., the Lakes Area Dive Team recovered the body of Francis Peasley, 78, of Elizabeth, Minn., who was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.
An autopsy is being done by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office and the incident remains under investigation.Lake LaSalle is about 35 miles southwest of Bemidji.
