Man charged in sledgehammer attack
GILBERT, Minn. -- A Zim man who allegedly attacked a Gilbert man with a sledgehammer is charged with three felonies.
Justin Kenneth Rae, 21, Zim, is charged with first-degree assault-great bodily harm, second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.
According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to an assault call in Gilbert shortly after noon on Nov. 30. An officer found the victim lying on his back on the kitchen floor with several articles of clothing wrapped around his head. There was blood on the victim and the floor around him. Rae’s mother came in from the living room holding a sledgehammer.
“Justin hit him with this. I can’t believe he did this,” she told an officer, adding that the victim and Rae argued .
Officers followed footprints from the house to a neighboring residence, where they found and arrested Rae. He is being held in the St. Louis County Jail. His initial appearance on the charges is scheduled for Dec. 17.
