Man accused of beating Fargo teenager charged with conspiracy to commit assault today
FARGO, N.D. - The 25-year-old man who is accused of beating up a 15-year-old boy in a schoolyard here on Monday was charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault today in Cass County District Court.
Police reports filed with the charges against Roger Allen Hellerud state that a witness told police one of the purported attackers told the boy to "stop creeping on my sister."
The girl that remark refers to is the younger sister of both Hellerud and a 17-year-old girl who told police she was also involved in the assault, according to court records filed with the felony charges.
As many as five people may have been involved in the attack on a playground outside Madison Elementary, including three juveniles, court records show.
Sgt. Mark Lykken said the investigation is still ongoing, but police anticipate there will be further charges or, in the case of minors, referrals to juvenile court. More arrests are unlikely today, he said.
A 15-year-old boy who said he was involved in the assault told police that the attackers punched, pushed, kicked and stomped on the face of the victim, according to court documents.
Hellerud told police that he hit the boy once in the face but denied assaulting him in any other way, the court complaint states.
His mother told police Hellerud is mentally ill and can be violent when he's off his medication. If he's not medicated, Hellerud can "have unlimited amounts of adrenaline," his mother told police.
Bail was set at $5,000 cash or bond for Hellerud, who made an initial appearance in court today.
