BEMIDJI – The Maid-Rite Cafe has been a fixture here for some time. But after 26 years, Judy and Curtis Black have sold Maid-Rite Cafe to Lueken's Village Foods.

The business will remain a restaurant, but will no longer be part of the Maid-Rite chain, according to Judy Black, owner and manager.

"I’m going to miss the people, the customers," Black said. "A lot of the customers have become really good friends."

The changing of hands to Lueken's is set for May 15, but Black said the last day for the Maid-Rite Cafe will be May 11. The Maid-Rite Cafe’s inventory will be liquidated. Lueken's will keep it as a restaurant, Black said. Attempts to reach Lueken's management were unsuccessful.

"It’s too much work," Judy Black said of running the business. "It’s the work for a 40-year-old, not a 65-year-old."

The Maid-Rite Café was originally located in downtown Bemidji.

"We were downtown across from Paul and Babe. We were there for 15 years," Black said. "Then Security State Bank bought the property and tore the building down."

The business then moved to its current location at 1602 Bemidji Ave. N. But the decision to sell was simple.

"It was time to retire," Black said.
