Lumberjacks swimming: Hemp, Howard, medley relay gain state meet
ALEXANDRIA — Tyler Hemp qualified for next week’s state Class A swimming and diving meet in two individual events plus the 200 medley relay and diver Sam Howard will also make a return appearance at the state after their performances at Saturday’s Section 5A competition at the Alexandria High School pool.
Hemp punched his individual ticket to state by placing second in the 200 individual medley and finishing second in the 100 breast stroke. The top two finishers in each event plus all individuals and relay teams that hit the state standard earned trips to the state meet.
Hemp’s runner-up time in the 200 IM of 2:06.90 advanced the senior to the state in both categories. Mark Kallevig of Alexandria won the event in 2:03.59.
In the 100 breast stroke Hemp was one of three section athletes to advance to the state. Elliot Jacobson of Alexandria won the race in 1:00.86 while Hemp was second in 1:01.20. Michael Richter of Detroit Lakes claimed third in 1:01.64.
All three performances broke the previous section record of 1:02.02 and also easily bettered the state meet standard of 1:04.05.
Howard finished second in the diving with 452.15 but was well behind the section winning performance of Reid Magnuson of Fergus Falls who earned 498.45 points from the judges.
Both of those efforts also topped the previous section record of 446.05.
Also earning the chance to represent the Lumberjacks at the state meet was the 200 medley relay team of Nate Gubbels, Hemp, Matthew Arndt and Wyatt Yartz. The foursome finished third in the event but the time of 1:42.48 bettered the state standard of 1:44.37.
The section will actually advance four 200 medley relay teams to state as the top four finishers all beat the state standard.
Also placing in the top eight Saturday but falling short in their bids to make it to state were Yartz who was fifth in the 50 free, Thomas Mykleseth who was fifth in the 500 free, Gubbels who was sixth in the 100 free and seventh in the 100 back plus Arndt who was seventh in the 100 breast stroke.
Bemidji’s 400 free relay unit of Gubbels, Mykleseth, Yartz and Hemp finished fourth and the 200 free relay squad of Arndt, Max Fugli, Ryan Heisler and Mykleseth was sixth.
Fergus Falls won the section team title with 390 points while the Jacks were fifth with 240.
