Loren G. Sharp, 63, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, June 9, 2008 under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, after suffering a 20-year battle with multiple sclerosis.
Loren Gordon Sharp was born to Gordon and Mae Ann (Listul) Sharp on May 4, 1945 in Breckenridge. He spent his entire life in the Lake Park-Detroit Lakes area, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1964. He married Jean Panter on June 25, 1965 in Detroit Lakes, and they made their home on Lake Melissa.
Loren served in the National Guard from 1965-71, spending time in Fort Gordon, Ga., and Fort Jackson, S.C. He worked in area lumberyards, at Dynamic Homes, at Snappy's, and he also did carpentry. For 18 years, he taught firearms safety and for 14 years, he worked as a chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital and Nursing Home. He was a hospice chaplain in 1985. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Loren loved hunting and fishing. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved his home, health care team and enjoyed joking with them.
Surviving Loren are his wife, Jean Sharp of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Heidi Geyer of Detroit Lakes and Holly Sharp, of Santa Monica, Calif.; one son, Justin (Jackie) Sharp of Detroit Lakes; one brother, Lynn Sharp of Allen, Texas; stepmother Claryce Sharp of Detroit Lakes; as well as stepsisters Bonny (Joe) Johannes of Minneapolis and Pam (Gary) Nelson of Perham.
Preceding Loren in death were his parents; grandparents; and a son, Blake.
Visitation will take place from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, June 15 at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, at First Baptist Church, Detroit Lakes, with interment following at Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeview Township, rural Detroit Lakes.
