The rumors are true. Blackduck area residents are being stalked by lions.

There is no need to panic. These Lions are helpful, not harmful. They are members of the Blackduck Lions Club who will be asking you to purchase a 2012-13 Sure To Win booklet for $35.

The Sure To Win booklet is a collection of discount coupons from nearly every business in Blackduck, as well as numerous offers from Bemidji merchants as well. There are discounts on gifts, restaurants, automotive needs, paint, hardware and entertainment options.

Those who purchase booklets are entered into a drawing for cash prizes that are awarded every month. In July, the club will draw three $100 winners. From August to May two $50 prizes will be presented each month. In June 2013, three more $100 winners will be announced.

The sale of the Sure To Win booklets is the Blackduck Lions Club's major fundraising effort for the year. All profits from the sale are used to fund local, statewide and national projects.

In the past year, the Blackduck Lions have made donations to Dollars for Scholars, the school After-Prom party, Take a Kid Fishing, the Blackduck High School Robotics team and Christmas Gifts for Kids, among other ventures.

Those who bought Sure To Win booklets helped the Lions obtain special equipment for a sight impaired student in the elementary school and have helped the school nurses in Blackduck, Kelliher and Northome obtain devices to better test the vision and hearing of students. The playground equipment addition to the wayside rest was funded in part by the Lions.

Nationally and internationally, the Lions work to support activities that improve sight in many individuals. To this end, the Blackduck Lions contribute toward the Minnesota Eye Bank at the University of Minnesota, innovative diabetes research at the U of M and Leader Dogs for the Blind, among other charities.

For 30 years, the Blackduck Lions have sought to support the community through a variety of endeavors.

If a Lion does stalk and catch you, do not be alarmed. The purchase of a Sure To Win booklet will send you and your Lion away with a smile, knowing you have helped not only yourself, but your community as well.

If you are not being pursued by a Lion and would like to purchase a booklet, contact Lion Dwight Warden at 835-4269 or Bud Johnson at 835-4375.
