Lillian Elaine Humeniuk
Lillian Elaine Humeniuk, 92, of Bemidji died on the 3rd of August, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji. Lil was born May 14, 1922 in Brooks, Alberta, Canada to Edward Lawrence and Marie (Dahl) Bannon. She was proud of her Irish and Norwegian heritage.
When she was 3 years old her family moved from Canada, first to Zipple Bay and then to Williams, MN. She grew up the only girl with five brothers. She attended school in Williams, but moved to Baudette to attend high school. She married Victor Humeniuk on February 23, 1941. They lived in Baudette where Vic worked in the post office and eventually becoming the postmaster. They raised seven children. When most had left home she began working as a nurses aide at the Baudette hospital.
Lil moved to Prineville, Oregon in 1973 where her parents settled. She worked as a nurses aide at the Prineville hospital. In 1983 she moved back to Bemidji and purchased a home in Nymore where she lived until 2012 when she moved to the WindSong Senior Apartments. She worked as a nurses aide for North Country Hospital for a number of years, and then as an attendant as the South End Car Wash.
Lil had a joy and enthusiasm for life which overflowed to those around her. In her younger years, she was a master at knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She was never afraid to try something new. During the last months of her life she learned how to crochet rugs despite being blind. She enjoyed collecting recipes, cooking and baking. No one left her home hungry. She loved to yard sale, hated to pass up a second hand store, and was always thrilled to find a bargain. She came alive in her garden, often saying, "One is nearer to God in the garden then anywhere on earth". Her greatest gift was her ability to listen. She had wisdom we all relied on. Above and beyond everything else, she loved her family and spending time with them.
She is survived by her sons, Jim (Jean) Humeniuk and Steve (Peggy) Humeniuk, both of Bemidji, and John (Judy) Humeniuk of Baudette; daughters, Mary Lynne (Zar) Omar of Henderson, Tennessee, Kaye McDonald of Moore, Oklahoma and Holly (Larry Overbeek) Humeniuk of Bemidji; her grandchildren, Ed Humeniuk, Marty Humeniuk, Bridgette Callahan, Nartea Callahan, Jonathan Neev, Kevin McDonald, James McDonald, Karen McDonald, Jessica Bremer, Heidi Hulsebus, Peter Humeniuk, Rachel Humeniuk, Eli Baumann, and Kate Baumann; 13 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Edward Humeniuk; brothers, Mel, Otis, Babe, Eldon, and Dale; and former husband Victor Humeniuk.
A Memorial Service was held on August 6, 2014 at the Helgeson Funeral Home in Baudette with interment at the Elm Park Cemetery.
