Letter: We as citizens need to be heard at the ballot box

Email

Well folks, it seems that our elected officials are at it again. I just received my proposed 2014 property tax statement today. Being a curious sort of person, I wanted to see if what I had read in the paper today about my taxes not going up was true. I quickly opened my statement, went directly to the bottom and by golly what they said was true. My proposed taxes were going down 2.8 percent.

Lo and behold they were telling the truth. Imagine that. Someone from the government not lying to me. But wait, I thought, maybe I should look a little closer. I started going up the statement line by line. Some went up, some went down, until I got to the line that said taxable market value. Seems my property lost 8.9 percent of its value between 2013 and 2014. Now I might be paying less taxes, but my property is worth considerably less. Seems my esteemed County Board chairman took his ball-peen hammer out of the “Minnesota property tax relief toolbox” and gave my property value a real pounding. This, folks, is what they call smoke and mirrors. Give with one hand and take with the other.

If we ever hope to fix this problem, we as citizens of this country need to be heard at the ballot box. If they’re an incumbent, don’t vote for them. It doesn’t matter if they are Republican, Democrat, Independent or other, we need to vote the bums out. This needs to be done at every level of government from local through federal and it needs to continue to be done every election. Seems if we give them more than one term corruption sets in and they just can’t help themselves.

Take a close look at your proposed taxes for next year. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.
