Letter: In a recession, stop automatic pay raises for Congress

Email

As you are well aware, we are in a recession with families across the United States facing a decline in their real wages, Congress will receive the first portion of its automatic annual pay increase.

By the end of 2009, this raise will amount to a $4,700 increase over last year's salaries, bringing annual congressional salaries to $174,000. Is that even ethical? That "We the People" who are struggling to make an honest living, barely making ends meet and they are getting a pay increase. I think not!

Remember that our lawmakers work for us, "We the People" and it was "We the People" who elected them to the position they now have and it is "We the People" who now have an opportunity to support HR 156, the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act.

This legislation would stop the automatic congressional pay raise for 2010. We must show support for this bill to show that this is not a class system where the peasants who are starving elect princes and princesses to live off the fat of the people during hard economic times. They do that enough already! Call your congressman or congresswoman to support HR 156.
