Letter: Americans should learn from our mistakes
History repeats itself. During the last two centuries many Americans were misled to believe that American Indian ceremonies and practices were pagan, heathen and even devil-worship. Traditional Indian ways were forbidden by federal policies for more than 50 years and strongly discouraged for another 50. And this happened in our country that prides itself on religious freedom. Finally in 1978 Indian leaders succeeded in the passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.
Now we have the anti-Islamic movement. New century. New target. Same misguided message. Let’s learn from our mistakes.
