Leonard R. Hendrickson, 80, of Vergas, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008 at his home in Vergas.

Leonard Roy Hendrickson was born to Albert and Ruth (Miller) Hendrickson on Jan. 8, 1928 in Brainerd. Leonard attended country school at District 166 in Dora Township, rural Vergas, and also attended Pelican Rapids High School. Moving to Idaho, Leonard took a job in a silver mine, and also worked at a lumber mill in Oregon.

On March 22, 1951 Leonard was drafted in the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on Dec. 22, 1952. Leonard moved to Butte, Mont., where he met his future wife, Mary Lou. On Feb. 1, 1954 Leonard married Mary Lou Vigurs in Montana. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Together Leonard and Mary Lou made their home in Butte, where Leonard was employed with the Anaconda Copper Mining Company.

In 1973 Leonard and Mary Lou moved to Vergas, where he enjoyed farming, building many miles of fence, cutting many cords of wood and was employed moving houses. Leonard loved dancing, bowling, fishing and was a member of the Vergas Lions, V.F.W. Post 612 of Fergus Falls and the Eagles of Fergus Falls.

Preceding Leonard in death were his parents; two brothers, Clifford and Robert; sister Vera (Richard) Blossom; brother-in-law, Don Harris.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou Hendrickson of Vergas; two sons, Ron (Nancy) Hendrickson and Jim Hendrickson, both of Butte, Mont.; three daughters, Diane Hendrickson of Boulder, Mont., Brenda (Wayne) Hayden of Detroit Lakes and Karen (Tom) Bunkowski of Vergas; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; three sisters, Kathryn (Paul) Schauff of Fergus Falls, Carol (Jim) Drechsel of Fergus Falls and Lorraine Harris of Brooklyn Center; two brothers, Walter (Joyce) Hendrickson of Butte, Mont., and Arlan Hendrickson of Dallas, Texas; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Hendrickson of Brooklyn Park and Charlotte Vigurs of Butte, Mont.; an uncle and two aunts as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dent, with the Rev. Dan Walz and Rev. Larry Schmidt officiating. The honorary pallbearers will be all of Leonard's grandchildren. Interment is in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Dent.
