Legion gains state tournament berth with Thursday's late victory
The Bemidji Legion baseball team qualified for next week's state tournament in Eden Prairie late Thursday night when it defeated Sauk Rapids 9-6 in the District 6 winner's bracket final in St. Cloud.
The Legion is the lone unbeaten team remaining in the tournament field.
Thursday's win moved Bemidji into today's district championship series and a 6 p.m. game against either St. Cloud Chutes or Sauk Rapids. Those teams will square off at noon and the winner will face Bemidji.
If Bemidji (25-4) wins tonight it claims the district title. If the Legion loses a rematch will be held Saturday at noon.
Ryan Hirt (4-0) worked the first five innings Thursday to earn the victory. Tyler Follis pitched four innings for his first save of the summer.
Follis also contributed a double and two singles while Dom Hayle had three singles. Cody Rutledge and Collin Leif each ripped a double and a single.
