Laura Dorothy "Jane" Cooper, 86, of Bemidji, died on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at GoldPine Home in Bemidji.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji with Rev. Eric Hucke officiating. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday in the small chapel at the United Methodist Church and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

She was born on March 7, 1921, to Emil and Laura (Solberg) Tweten, in Bemidji. She attended Lincoln School in Bemidji and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1939. She received a teaching degree from Bemidji State University in 1941 and later completed a bachelor of science degree from Bemidji State University in 1963. She taught elementary school in Tenstrike and Mahtomedi, Minn., before returning to Bemidji in 1945. She married Albert B. Cooper on Aug. 11, 1945, in Solway. She was principal and also taught second grade at Lincoln Elementary School from 1945-49. She taught second grade and special education at Central Elementary School in Bemidji from 1956 until her retirement in 1979. She was nominated for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 1978.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), T.T.T. and PEO Chapter AT during her teaching career and in retirement. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as chapter president from 1972-74. She was an active member and lay leader of the United Methodist Church in Bemidji and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed playing bridge, world travel and gardening. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends, family and keeping in touch with former students. She volunteered for many years at the North Country Regional Hospital.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas of Bemidji and Charles of Eagan, Minn.; brother, Emil Jr. of Redding Calif.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Ruth Bennison, Lorraine Figel, A. Vivian Ohman and Ida Mae Winklesky; and brothers, Stanley and Richard Tweten.

Memorial are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.
