Late runs help Beaver baseball team gain split with Augustana
BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji State baseball team used late-inning runs to down Augustana 7-5 in the second game of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday at the BSU Baseball Field.
The Beavers lost game one 7-2. They are 15-15 overall on the season and 8-8 in the NSIC. The teams meet again at noon today for two more games.
The Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first game on a two-run homer by junior Logan Kalis.
But Augustana tied it in the fourth inning and tacked on five more runs to get the victory.
In the second game, Bemidji forged another lead at 3-0 before the Vikings responded with five runs. But this time the Beavers had an answer of their own.
In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Kean Paxton doubled down the right-field line and scored on a two-out double by Chad Hanson to cut Augie's lead to 5-4.
With one out in the seventh, Jaryd Marks was beaned on the first pitch to gain first, then moved to second on a single to center by Kalis. After Mauricio Gomez struck out for the second out, Juan Molero laced a shot to the left-center gap that scored both runners to give the Beavers the 6-5 lead.
BSU loaded the bases in the eighth and scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.
Miles Campbell sat down the Vikings in order in the top of the ninth. He retired eight batters and allowed only two hits.
