Kimberly Janet Thorson

Kimberly J. Thorson, 57, of Bemidji passed away peacefully in her home on November 8, 2013 after a 6-year fight against Stage IV breast cancer.

She was born January 16, 1956 in Duluth to Charles Ericksen and Nina (Lundin) Ericksen. She lived in Two Harbors, MN through the 2nd grade. Her mother remarried in 1963 and the family moved to the Twin Cities area where she graduated in 1974 from Brooklyn Center High School. In 1979 she moved to Austin, Texas where she attended Austin Community College and became a certified Activities Director for nursing homes. She married Jeffry Menten in 1984 and their son Darian E. Menten was born in Austin, Texas in 1984. Kim spent 7 years in Texas working as an activities coordinator and began what would be her lifelong passion; singing in various musical groups.

She moved to Bemidji in 1985. She was actively involved in foster parenting through the "PATH" program from 1988 1993. She continued her singing career in the Bemidji area with groups including "Snowy River," "The Mentones" and "The Radio Flyers." After a divorce she married Erik S. Thorson of Bemidji in 1999. In 1996 she and Erik began Music Box Productions, a specialty music recording business focusing on their own original personalized songs with customized narrations. Her spirit and beautiful voice will live on through the thousands of musical family keepsakes that they produced in their home-based studio over the past 17 years.

In addition to singing and songwriting, Kimberlys other passions included gardening, meditation, improving and decorating her beautiful home and exploring all things metaphysical and spiritual.

Kimberly was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Erik, son Darian (Courtney) Menten of Moose Lake, MN, brother Charles "Chuck" Ericksen of St. Paul, MN, granddaughters Alivia (7) and Ava (3) Menten, special friends Thelma "Teddy" Knowles of Akeley, MN and Terri Nelson of St. Paul, MN and her 2 loving canine companions Franklin & Daisy.
