Kenneth R. Donaghue, 67 of Bemidji, MN died Tuesday, September 24, 2013 in Fargo, ND as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Funeral Services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Evergreen Northern Township Cemetery in Bemidji, MN with military honors by the Ralph Gracie American Legion Post #14 of Bemidji. He was born May 16, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN the son of Jay and Dottie (Bowers) Donaghue. He grew up in the Plymouth, Medicine Lake area. Ken graduated from Wayzata High School in 1964, where he lettered in hockey, football and baseball. Ken was drafted into the Army in July, 1966 and proudly served his country as a member of the First Air Calvary/Artillery Division. He served in Germany and Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal. He was discharged in May, 1968. After his discharge he attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute where he earned a degree in Architecture Engineering and Land Surveying. Ken married Priscilla Johnson on June 6, 1970. They had two sons, Tim and Michael. Ken retired from MN DOT in 2005 where he worked as a Registered Land Surveyor and Land Management Supervisor for 27 years. Ken had many different interests and hobbies; including hunting, trapping, fishing and playing fast-pitch softball. He coached youth hockey and played "Old-Timers" hockey. Ken also loved his time at his hunting shack on Little Bass Lake where he spent many hours working with his saw mill, planting food plots, fishing, hunting, and just being in the woods. Ken especially enjoyed any opportunity to spend time with his family; especially his grandchildren. Another passion for Ken was riding his Harley. He was a founding member of Post 1 of the American Legion Riders of Deer River; co-founder of Bemidji Ride for the Troops, Member of the NW Chapter of ABATE MN, member of the Freedom Defenders Veterans Memorial in Bemidji, member of the Patriot Guard Riders. He was a member of the American Legion where he volunteered in the honor guard and was a life time member of the VFW. Ken actively supported Veterans and their families.
He is survived by his wife Priscilla of Bemidji; sons Tim (Renae) Donaghue and their daughters Brooke and Riley of Bemidji and Mike (Brandi) Donaghue and their son Tanner of Fergus Falls; brothers Tom (MaryLou) Donaghue of Lamberton, Jerry Donaghue of Plymouth, Leon (Linda) Donaghue of Maple Grove; sisters Jean Williams of Minneapolis, Jayne (Ron) Smead of Plymouth, Janet (Ron) Peterson of Hopkins and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John, sister-in-law Joyce, niece Jodi and nephew Jeff.
