Kelliher students complete star team training
Students from Kelliher, along with advisor Carly Amsden recently completed the Students Teaching Attitudes of Respect Team Program sponsored by the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.
They were among a group of 70 students and advisors attending this year's two-day STAR teams training at Concordia Language Villages near Bemidji. These teams will return later in the school year for another two-day retreat to reconnect, review and learn new concepts. Training is provided by staff of Peacemaker Resources.
STAR nurtures young people in the development of their character, values and relationships. Students learn about communication skills, media awareness, conflict management, non-competitive games and thought processes leading to self-responsibility. They then return to their schools and communities to teach the skills of positive communication and problem-solving to other students, their families and community groups.
The STAR teams program is available to sixth and seventh grade students from schools throughout the NMF region, including Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau counties. To date nearly 2,000 students from area schools have taken part in the program.
