Kelliher School Board holds Truth in Taxation, regular meeting

Members of the Kelliher School Board met Dec. 8 for the regular meeting.

Board chairman Frank Duresky opened the meeting for the Truth in Taxation meeting. Since there was no one in the audience to address the board regarding the 2011 payable 2012 property tax levy, the Truth in Taxation meeting was closed and the regular meeting continued.

The first thing on the regular agenda was the approval of the Nov. 10 regular meeting minutes, the treasurer's reports and December bills in the amount of $107,079.27.

Bridget Stomberg addressed the board and thanked them for their support of the school/community production of It's a Wonderful Life. She then addressed the board and distributed information on the possibility of adding one-act play and speech as extra-curricular offerings in the district.

During the Positive Feedback portion of the meeting, the board offered congratulations to those students who made the first quarter honor roll and the students of the month for November -- Kailyn Martin for the elementary; Savannah Thibert for middle level and Cassie Vollhaber for the high school.

It was mentioned that the Kelliher School District's YouTube video will be presented at the upcoming PBIS conference.

A letter was received from a math teacher in the Brainerd School District requesting our help in developing a math curriculum.

Superintendent Lutz updated the board on the work at the Old School Center nearing completion.

The board was informed that nineor 10 choir students will be attending honor choir at Concordia College in Moorhead.

Discussion was held regarding putting action on the addition of a one-act play program and a speech program at the Kelliher School on the agenda.

The board was informed that there will be an open house at the Kelliher Library and Information Center Dec. 21.

Supt. Lutz informed the board that he has been contacted by a dentist from Bigfork about the possibility of a satellite office at the Old School Center.

He also informed them that due to the number of students in Early Childhood with special needs, BRIC is requesting the district hire a Special Education paraprofessional. A motion was then made to add the request to the agenda as F-7 before it was approved unanimously.

The possibility of adding an Ojibwe language curriculum as an enrichment program was discussed, with the board requesting the administration to do additional research in ways that it may be accomplished.

Lutz informed the board that there has been a request from Judy Ross to be able to offer piano lessons in the school.

It was noted that the date of the January board meeting will have to be rescheduled due to conflicts with the Minnesota School Boards Association annual conference. Jan. 9 was set for the next regular meeting.

Lutz informed the board that Dave Hanson recommended that the district should consider purchasing a new bus this year, in addition to possibly trading in one or both SUVs.

The baord voted to approve a double lane change for next year as requested at the November meeting. They also voted to approve hiring Beth Anderson, a Title I paraprofessional for 6.75 hours/day, at A-2, step 1 for $10.05/hour.

They then voted to allow Judy Ross to use the school building in order to give piano lessons.

A vote was taken to certify the 2011 Payable 2012 property tax levy for $392,751.56. The certification was then approved.

Matt Hanson was hired as assistant girls basketball coach at 9 percent, BS Step 5 for $3,561.75.

The board voted to add one-act play and speech as MSHSL extra-curricular activities for the 2011-12 school year.

The administration was authorized to hire an Early Childhood Special Education paraprofessional for three days per week.

The meeting was then closed at 8:09 p.m. as permitted under MN Statute 13D.03, to discuss strategy for negotiations with Education Minnesota-Kelliher. Motion passed unanimously.

The the meeting was then reopened less than 20 minutes later and adjourned.

The reorganizational and regular board meeting will be held Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. in the school media center.
