Kelliher FCCLA promotes breast cancer awareness
"The Three Breast Friends," Nathan Anderson, Cassie Vollhaber and Johanna Weidenborner have been working together during October to promote breast cancer awareness. We have been working on our FCCLA Chapter Service Project to raise breast cancer awareness. We felt that the members of our school and community of Kelliher may not be aware of the impact of breast cancer.
We planned many events and activities that we could do to get not only our school but also the community involved. We held a dance called "Get your PINK on!" Oct. 14 after the last home football game. We visited local and Bemidji businesses to get donations for the dance and door prizes The Kelliher Student Council donated $100 to our project to help the dance, refreshments and prizes.
We attended the October Kelliher School Board meeting and requested a $100 donation from them. They surprised us with a grant of $350 for the DJ! We were totally shocked and thankful. It gave us a whole new look at what else we could do; not only for the dance but for the month of October as well.
Prizes that we collected were displayed in a display case at Kelliher High School. Students, staff and community members were allowed to purchase tickets to be put into the prize drawing. We drew ticket for the prizes Oct. 26. All money collected will be donated to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Throughout the month of October we had "PINK Fridays" and asked all students and staff to wear pink and they could also pay $1 to wear a hat and all proceeds went to our donation to Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Our Mustangs football team also got involved with breast cancer awareness and raised money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For every $10 donated a football player got to wear pink socks. They raised a total of $690.80.
On Oct. 14, our varsity football team played Onamia. This was our PINK night. All the football players were dressed to play in pink socks including the managers. Coaches had pink hats and Coach Gross sported a lovely pink sweater. The Mustangs proceeded to defeat Onamia 36-21.
Several Kelliher FCCLA members participated in the annual 5-mile Kelliher Breast Cancer Walk Oct. 1 that is organized each year by Jeanne Jean. Some of the women challenged themselves to walk from Kelliher to Waskish -- 18 miles. Each walker gave a $20 donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to participate. Over $2,000 has been raised so far. That same weekend the annual women's four-wheeler ride was also held in honor of breast cancer awareness.
Kelliher FCCLA members were also involved in the creation of the "Bra Wall" created by Jeannie Jean. Members were awarded two points for every bra donated to the construction of the wall. The theme of the "Bra Wall" is Big or Small, Save Them All.
With all the help and support we, the "Three Breast Friends," are proud to say that we raised $1,015.77 thanks to all the businesses, community members, students and staff. Mrs. Rabe, our advisor, allowed us to give her pink hair Oct. 31 to show how proud she was of us raising over $1,000. Overall we had a great turnout and people really got involved in helping us raise breast cancer awareness.
A total of $3,706.57 was raised to donate to Breast Cancer Awareness. We are planning on doing a Breast Cancer Week here at Kelliher School sometime in March.
