Kelliher bank robbery suspects indicted in federal court
MINNEAPOLIS – Two men accused of robbing a bank in Kelliher were indicted in federal court Wednesday.
Cody Lowell Troy, 19, of Mizpah, and Travis Michael Burns, 20, of Bemidji, were charged with one count of armed bank robbery, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. Troy was also charged with one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Both face a maximum of 25 years in prison for armed bank robbery. In addition, Troy faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years for brandishing a firearm during a violent crime and another maximum 10 years for being in possession of a firearm.
Troy was convicted of third-degree burglary in Koochiching County in 2011.
The indictment alleges that on Dec. 10, Troy and Burns stole about $3,738 from First State Bank of Bigfork in Kelliher.
According to the press release, Troy allegedly entered the bank wearing a white protective containment suit, a white mask popularized in the movie “Halloween,” basketball shoes and black gloves. He allegedly approached the teller, put a black backpack on the counter, pointed a 12-gauge, sawed-off shotgun at the teller and pumped the gun.
After the teller put the money in the bag, Troy fled in a red pickup truck.
Troy was arrested on Dec. 12 on an outstanding Itasca County warrant for failure to appear in court in connection to a prior felony. Officers had also located a red truck matching the description of one seen leaving the area of the bank.
During the execution of a search warrant at the Bemidji apartment where Burns lived and Troy was staying, authorities seized shotgun shells, a hacksaw, and a loaded sawed-off shotgun, as well as the sawed-off gun stock and barrel. Authorities say the shotgun’s serial number was partially destroyed.
They also recovered the clothes Troy was wearing when he allegedly robbed the bank.
The backpack and some money from the bank were found in Burns’ bedroom, according to the press release.
