Julia was born December 8, 1921 in the European country of Slovenia, the daughter of Jacob and Antonia (Porenta) Dolenc. She was raised and educated there. Because her brother was brave and spoke out against the Yugoslavian communist government, his entire family was expelled from their home country and placed in a displaced person camp in Austria for 4 years. It was there she met Frank Samsa and they were married on Nov. 28, 1946. In 1949, they were sponsored by Franks uncle and they moved to Chisholm, MN. Her parents and brother were sponsored by a family in Argentina, she never saw them again. They made their home in Chisholm for the next 50 years. Besides raising her family, she worked at shirt factory in Chisholm for several years. She also did housekeeping for the Buchanon Nursing Home, the Catholic Church and private family homes.
She was an active member of St. Josephs Catholic Church in Chisholm. They moved to Bemidji in 2000 to be close to their son Louis. Julia was a caring, loving mother who was a wonderful friend and neighbor. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, walking, crocheting. She was a wonderful cook and baker and spent quality time in preparing her ethnic foods. Her family looked forward to spending time at the dinner table enjoying her foods and reminiscing about family in Europe and special times. And most of all, she had a tremendous faith in God and her Catholic religion. She spent many days reciting the rosary and praying for her family.
She was a giving and caring person and will be missed her by her family, her son- Louis (Doreen) Samsa of Bemidji, Her daughter- Veda (Robert) Emanuel of Hibbing, MN, 5 grandchildren and a great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004.
