Judith "Judy" Marie Ross

Judith (Judy) Marie Ross, born May 13, 1949, 65 years young, the first child of Virgil and Mary Ann (Zimmerman ) Baltes, left this earth to be with the heavenly father on July 16, surrounded by love and family.

A wake will be held on Sunday July 20 from 5-7 p.m. at Cease Family Funeral Home in Blackduck with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Blackduck at 10:00 a.m.

The family was living near Foxhome, Minnesota when Judy was born in the Breckenridge Hospital. After siblings Gary and Jimmy were born, the family moved to Blackduck, MN in 1954.

Judy graduated from Blackduck High School in 1967 and Bemidji State University in 1971 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Vocal Music K-12 and a Minor in Piano. While at BSU, Judy spent a lot of time on her love of musical comedy. Her first teaching job was at Willmar, Minnesota and then she moved to Sebeka for the 1972-1973 school year to teach vocal music to 4th-12th grade.

On July 28, 1973 Judy married James (Jim) Ross at St. Ann Catholic Church in Blackduck, MN and raised three children; Jennifer, Jay, and Jon, and she considered herself the biggest fan of all three children.

In 1980 she worked part time at Squaw Lake Elementary school two days a week for eight years, then spent one year in Blackduck and seven years in Kelliher, teaching vocal and instrumental music. She finally realized that she needed a rest so she started part-time in Blackduck. She retired in 2004 but went back and finished the 2005 school year.

While at Kelliher, she did 5 musical productions and she did 4 musical productions while at Blackduck. Musical comedies were her favorite thing to do. Judy states "sometimes I loved my job so much that I felt I should pay the school for letting me work!".

In 1993, Judy was selected to become a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary woman's teaching society. In 2004, Delta Kappa Gamma selected her as "Woman of Achievement". The same year, she was selected as Minnesota's High School Vocal Teacher of the Year. Judy was also Teacher of the Year in both Kelliher and Blackduck.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Mary Ann (Zimmerman) Baltes.

Judy is survived by her husband of 41 years, James (Jim) Ross, daughter Jennifer (Christian) Knutson of Bemidji, MN, Jay (Jesi) Ross of Park Rapids, MN, and Jonathon (Tiffany) Ross of Blackduck, MN. Judy leaves behind four grandchildren, grandsons, Cael James and Cash Robert Knutson, Aiden Jon Ross and granddaughter, Avery Rae Ross. Judy was most proud of her grandchildren and cherished being a grandmother. Judy is also survived by brothers Gary (Donna) Baltes of Bemidji, Jim (Colleen) Baltes of Moorhead, and Bobby Baltes of Sauk Rapids and sister Nancy (Greg) Robinson of Staples, MN and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
