Joseph Leslie Compton, 86, of Solway, MN, succumbed to bladder cancer surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at his sons home in Tenstrike, MN.
Services will be 12:00 noon, Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN with officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00am-12noon prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday. Interment will be at the Moose Creek Cemetery in Shevlin, MN under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
He was born on October 5, 1927, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Joseph N. and Marguerite Virginia (Murray) Compton. He was raised and educated in Pleasant Valley and Liberty, MO. He graduated from the North Kansas City High School in 1946. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1946 and served as a Navy Medic during the final months of WWII in Guam. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He worked various jobs, and moved to California for a time. He returned to Missouri where he was a sheet metal worker, and later a Parts Manager for Clay County Implement dealership. He took a job with the United States Postal Service, where he worked for over 20 years until his retirement. He vacationed many years on Pimushe Lake in Pennington, MN, where he later built his retirement home. He was a member of the Missouri City Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shriners, and the American Legion. Joe loved to go bowling, dancing, and socialize with his friends. He was a volunteer at the Bemidji Senior Center. His family gives special thanks to Sanford Bemidji Hospice, Dr. Spence of Bagley, and all the nursing staff at the Clearwater County Hospital. Joe was a loving companion, father, grandfather, and friend to all.
He is survived by:the love of his life the last 13 years,Lillian McNamara of Solway, MN,Sons,Mike (Vicki) Compton of Blue Springs, MO,Dale (Judy) Compton of Tenstrike, MN, Sisters,Jean Meadows of Kansas City, MO,Sylvia (Don) Short of Alamo, TX,Barbara Ragle of Kansas City, MO,6 Grandchildren, and 6 Great-Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph N. Compton, his mother Marguerita Essig, step-father Fred Essig, brother James Essig, and brother-in-law Ray Meadows.
Active Casketbearers will be Shane Compton, Ben Compton, Michael Holder, Bruce McNamara, Larry Hendricks, and Dave Levy. Honorary Casketbearers will be: Charles Compton, Ervin Yoder, Richard McCluag, Knut Naastad, Richard Ruud, Earl Speckman, and all of his bowling buddies.
