John Eskridge

John Simril Eskridge, 80, of Bemidji died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 11:37 pm his home in the company of loved ones. He fought a courageous battle with leukemia diagnosed in January of 2013.

Memorial Services will be June 29, 2013 with more information to come. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.

John was born January 31, 1933 in Spartenburg, South Carolina the son of John Coit and Virginia Stickland Eskridge. He graduated high school in 1950 and enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Boxer (CV-21) throughout the Korean Conflict. He attended Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, Macon, Georgia, graduating in 1959. He worked in private law practice from 1959-1961 in Lagrange, Georgia. Then he went in the US Air Force Direct appointment as a 1st Lieutenant in 1961. John spent 16 years as Judge Advocate and with his Navy time retired March 1, 1978 after 20 years. He bought a ranch in Solway, MN. He then met his loving wife Goodie Doris Olson and they were married December 24, 1984. They have resided in Bemidji for 30 years. John was a rodeo rider in Georgia, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. He had a love for animals and enjoyed breaking wild horses. People always commented, “He has a way with animals”. John and Goodie both volunteered as fire wardens issuing burning permits. John had been a long time member of the Republican Party. His favorite hobbies were restoring antique guns and cars. They enjoyed traveling to Georgia, the Carolina’s, California and Arizona visiting friends and family. John was a loving husband, amazing father and cherished his family. He was known for his great sense of humor and vibrant laughter. He always commented on how proud he was of his family. “I have lived a great life with much contentment and satisfaction.” Ecclesiastes 12:7 And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

John is survived by his loving wife Goodie Eskridge of Bemidji; sister Sue Mayberry of Williamburg, VA; 2 daughters Vickie Eskridge (Philip) Cox of Auburn, CA, Fran Eskridge (Peter) Ahlgren of Cass Lake; son Bret (Amalia) Eskridge of Savannah, GA; grandchildren John Carter of Minneapolis, Krista (Nick) Caflisch of Rochester, MN, Alicia Carter, Paul Carter and Rachael Carter all of Bemidji, Chris Cox of Santa Barbara, CA, Steven Cox and Holly Cox of Auburn, CA, Angelo Eskridge, Christianna Eskridge, Lordjann Eskridge and Elihu Eskridge all of Savannah, GA and one great grandchild Maxwell Caflisch of Rochester, MN.

A special thanks to Hospice of Bemidji and all the great care of the nurses in his time of sickness.
