John Byer, 81, of Bemidji, MN died Sunday, July 28, 2013 at his home in Bemidji, MN.

John Clayton Byer was born September 9, 1931 in Guthrie Township, Hubbard County, MN. He was the son of Isaac (I.T.) and Cleo (Bolyard) Byer. He was raised in Guthrie, MN. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and spending time with family, especially his granddaughter Tanya (Byer) Goossen and husband Kurt of Bemidji, MN and their children Derrian, Koi and Macy. He was recognized for A Million Miles of Safe Driving by MNDOT and honored as the winner of the first stock car race, at the old Bemidji Raceway, which he helped construct in the 1950’s with horses and scrapers.

John is survived by a dear and special friend, Arleen Birchem, his children; John (Mike) Byer, Pattie Jo Vallance, Rick Byer, Tammy Sanders, James Posz, Christopher Posz, Roxane Byer, Rhonda Denton and Renee Strom; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and one more great-grandchild due Aug. 16, 2013. His surviving siblings include 5 sisters; Wanda Johnson, Ida Mae Eller, Bernice Reff, Milly Adams; 1 brother Bernell (Bunny) Byer and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Isaac and Cleo Byer, son Stephen Byer, 2 brothers Willis and Howard Byer and 1 sister Addie Posz.

At John’s request, no funeral services will be held.
