Jerel was born July 31, 1951 in Bagley, MN to parents Lloyd and Orlyn (Wennberg) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church of Clearbrook and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1969. On July 6, 1974 he married Sharon Bergman.

After completing his high school education, Jerel moved to New York and worked on a surveying crew. While there, he completed his flying lessons and earned his pilots license. Flying became a lifelong passion of his.

Jerel later returned to Clearbrook and went to work at Clearbrook Honey Farms, a business he later bought and operated for the rest of his life. He ran this migratory bee operation between Clearbrook, MN in the summers, and Colmesneil, TX in the winters.

Jerel was an avid reader, gardener, woodworker, and outdoor enthusiast. His life-long goal was to create a wildlife sanctuary for his children and grandchildren to enjoy.
