Jenkins throws 1-hitter to lead Jacks past Big Lake
BY PAT MILLER
BIG LAKE - Bemidji's bats continued to sound Friday as the Lumberjacks baseball team ripped 10 hits and cruised to a 5-1 victory at Big Lake.
BHS scored three runs in its initial at-bat and pitcher Cody Jenkins took it from there. Jenkins allowed a second-inning single and nothing else as he finished with a one-hitter.
"We got going early in the game with those five runs and then our bats slowed," said BHS coach Mike Fogelson. "But it didn't matter because Cody was in control the entire way."
Mitchell Hendricks was the catalyst in the first two in-nings. The senior opened the game by reaching on an error and quickly scored as Collin Leif and Cody Rut-ledge both singled.
The inning also featured RBI singles by Mason Bellew and Nick Hovila.
In the second stanza Hendricks walked, stole second and scored courtesy of Rut-ledge's double.
Bemidji tallied its final run in the third when Jenkins and Hovila singled and an error on Nick Conner's ground ball plated Drew Peterson who was running for the pitcher.
Jenkins struck out three and walked two. A trio of Big Lake hurlers fanned three and walked three.
Defensively the Lumberjacks committed four errors but Jenkins was able to work around those miscues.
"We can play better, especially defensively, but this was a nice win against a section opponent," Fogelson said.
Today sees the Jacks in the Twin Cities for a noon game against Eagan and a 4 p.m. contest at Minneapolis South.
"Eagan is among the top-ranked teams in the state and will give us a big test," Fogelson said. "And South also is a very good team. We made this trip because we wanted to face two very good teams and we're excited to play them."
Ryan Hirt will get the start-ing mound assignment against Eagan and Peterson will pitch against Minneapolis South.
