Jim was born to Willie and Muriel (Englund) Herfindahl on April 30, 1934 in Callaway. They moved to San Leandro, Calif., where Jim attended school. After graduating he enlisted in the Air Force. After four years of service he returned to California and worked at various jobs. In 1957 he returned to Minnesota.

On May 20, 1958, Jim married Sylvia Helseth in Battle Lake, Minn. After their marriage they moved to California, where their two daughters were born. In 1962, they moved to Fergus Falls, where Jim worked for Sears as a salesman. In 1967, Jim and his family moved to Detroit Lakes, where Jim became manager of the Sears store in town. In 1984 he sold the business and became semi-retired. He started working at the Detroit Lakes Country Club. He must have been happy because he worked there for 25 years!

Jim was a skilled wood worker, often going with his own designs and making it a finished product. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, stamp collecting and his Wednesday night card games with friends. In May 2008, Jim and Sylvia celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Jim will be remembered and missed by his wife, Sylvia Herfendahl of Detroit Lakes; daughters; Lori Anderson of Fargo and Julie (Pete) Randolph of Detroit Lakes; six grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother, Doug Herfendahl of California; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents, Willie and Muriel and one sister, Joyce Reece.

Funeral services for Jim are scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel of Detroit Lakes. There will be visitation at the chapel from 10 a.m. until the start of services.

The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is assisting the family with arrangements. An online guestbook is available at www.daviddonehower.com.
