Jacks roll over Red River
The Bemidji Lumberjacks baseball team rebounded from its sub-par effort against Brainerd Saturday to roll over the Grand Forks Red River Roughriders 16-4 in five innings Monday on UND's Kraft Stadium diamond.
The Jacks took full advantage of numerous scoring chances to score two times in the first three innings and roll up eight more in the fourth to put the game to bed. It lifted their record to 5-2. They host Detroit Lakes Thursday at BSU and play Eagan and Eden Prairie Saturday at Grand Rapids.
Sophomore Jeremiah Graves turned in a superlative mound performance, coming on in the first to quell a four-run rally and add four scoreless frames to follow. It was his second win in as many decisions.
Bemidji scored twice in each of the first three frames against loser Jordan Bancroft, then exploded against reliever Scott Swiers in the fourth.
They had only nine hits in the game, two for extra bases. But were aided no end by seven walks and six Riders errors.
The Jacks opened with two in the first when Matt Hietala singled and Simon Anderson reached on a two out error. Both scored on a single by Auston Zetah.
But starter Tyler Tatro got no one out in the last of the frame and left after yielding three hits and two walks for two runs.
Graves relieved and was greeted by Andrew Butkowski's single for two more runs.
But he allowed only one hit the rest of the day and became the winner behind the Jacks scoring barrage.
They tied the game in the second when two walks and a fumbled bunt filled the bases with no outs. Two sacrifice flies each plated a run.
Bemidji went ahead to stay in the third when Anderson walked and scored on Billy Statton's double. Pinch runner Alex Hengel scored on Tony Baumgartner's single.
Swiers relieved to start the fourth and provided no relief.
Hietala reached on an error and a walk and Sol Schneider's single sent him home. Anderson doubled in two more After Zetah walked, Anderson scored as Derek, Lofgren's grounder to third was thrown past the plate.
Statton's sacrifice fly plated Zetah.
Baumgartner's single and walk filled the bases and Hietala singled in two more The eighth crossed on a wild pitch.
The final pair scored in the fifth on a walk, Paul Voss' infield single, an error and wild pitch.
Hietala and Baumgartner were the only Jacks with two hits. Butkowski had two for the Riders.
The two Bemidji hurlers had seven strikeouts, all by Graves, and three walks.
The two Rider pitchers fanned three and walked seven.
Mark Varriano's forces dropped to 2-1 in a weather plagued campaign.
Anderson will try for his third win Thursday against DL.
B Team wins
Chad Head hurled a no hitter as the Jacks B Team also won 11-0 benefiting from 11 walks.
Bemidji had just six hits including a single and double by Jake Urban and Cole Bardwell's double. Head fanned five and walked two.
The B Team is now 3-3 and will send Cody Rutledge to the hill Thursday against Detroit Lakes.
