Jacks keep on winning with 2-1 win over Detroit Lakes
BEMIDJI – After playing three games in five days to open the season, the Bemidji boys soccer team could use a break.
The Lumberjacks are beat up and will use their week away from the pitch to recover from some nagging injuries. The 3-0 record to begin the fall should also help the healing process.
Tuesday at the middle school field BHS collected its third victory in as many outings as it edged Detroit Lakes.
Neither team found the net in the opening 40 minutes, but Bemidji outscored the Lakers 2-1 in the second stanza to post the victory.
The Lumberjacks are now off until Sept. 4 when they invade Grand Rapids.
“We could use some rest,” BHS coach Rick Toward said. “We were without starter Seth Wall (bruised quad muscle) and three of our other 11 guys are not 100 percent.
“It’s good that we have a rest to get some bumps and bruises taken care of and to figure out what has happened in these three games.”
The Lumberjacks played well in spurts Tuesday, according to Toward, controlling play during the first 10 minutes and for about 30 minutes of the second half.
“We’re playing well enough to win but not playing to our potential,” the coach said. “We know we are a better team than we are showing. And when we play the tougher teams on our schedule we will have to do a better job.
“When you are the defending conference champions and were the No. 1 seed in the section last year, you are wearing a bull’s-eye. You are a target for every opponent, and you have to be ready to play your best.”
Isak Sommer scored both Bemidji goals Tuesday. About 58 minutes in he broke the 0-0 deadlock by converting Joel Johannsen’s feed from 12 yards out.
Less than five minutes later Sommer struck again, this time with a rebound of his original 30-yard shot.
The visitors drew within 2-1 with about 11 minutes to play but Bemidji managed to hang on for the victory.
“I liked our second-half effort,” Toward said. “We definitely had more composure on the ball and were much more efficient in the second half. But against the better teams we’ll have to play that way for 80 minutes.”
