Moorhead appears to be among the teams to beat in the section boys golf scene but Bemidji made up some ground Monday at the Bemidji Town & Country Club.

The Lumberjacks shot their best round of the spring, 316, and finished second in the 20-team field. BHS trailed only Moorhead which carded a 310.

"You always like to win on your home track but Moorhead played very well and it's tough to beat a 70," said Bemidji assistant coach Ron Laituri, referring to Ryan Buckellow of Moorhead who finished with his 2-under-par round.

"We would have liked to see a win but we fell just a little short. Overall, we were very happy with our performance."

Considering what the weatherman has thrown at the Jacks golfers in May, Monday's conditions were pleasant. A steady and strong wind came off the lake and the morning temperatures were chilly.

"We toughed it out," Laituri said. "We've definitely played in worse conditions this year."

Joe Welle paced the Lumberjacks as he tied for fifth with a 5-over-77. Kevin Larson and Rylee Curb also broke 80 with 79s while Trey Dale and Max Hazelton shot 81. Jordan Manick finished with a 92.

BHS entered four teams in its home meet. In addition to placing second, Bemidji squads were 10th, 13th and 16th.

Matt Serratore paced Bemidji's second team as he shot 82. Zach Rickers ended at 86, Kodi Craft 89, Bo Borowski 90 and Sam Starkey 94.

Also representing the Lumberjacks and combining for a 359 were Elliot Leinen (86), Jake Hoffman (88), Kaleb Hanson (92), Randy Hilliard (92), Jordan Heller (93) and James Bofferding (101).

Bemidji's other team shot 395 and consisted of Ryan Erickson (90), Kasey Kavanagh (100), John Forseth (102) and Wyatt Miller (103).

The Jacks will be in action again on Wednesday when they head to Crosby-Ironton.
