The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys basketball team snapped its three game losing string Tuesday, scoring a 75-65 victory at Crookston.

Bemidji broke a tie late in the second half on two steals and layups by Ryan Rude and rode the strong free throw shooting of the Woods brothers down the stretch to widen the gap to its final 10 points.

Rude hit a season high 20, taking second to Carey Woods who led the Jacks with 24. Czar had 12.

Josh Baldock hit 19 to pace Crookston. Papou Maiga hit 14 with Ben Kurran netting 13.

Grant Richardson held 6-9 William Pankow to only eight in a fine defensive showing.

Bemidji limited its game to only 13 turnovers which proved an asset. But it missed 13 free throws, something Coach Jeff Brown intends to improve on as quickly as possible.

"We let them stay around with poor foul shooting," he said. "We had several big leads early in the game but let them slip away. But we were strong down the stretch when we had to be and that's what counts. "We also played a solid man to man defense in the final minutes of the game to never let Crookston get back into contention."

The Jacks have three days to get ready for Moorhead, a game set for a 2:30 p.m. start Saturday.

The win lifted the Jacks to 5-3 on the year and dropped Crookston to 6-4. It was the Pirates first start against a 3A opponent.

The BHS B Team continued its improved play with a 58-56 win, taking a 28-21 halftime lead and holding on.

J.C. Cervenka had his best night with 16 while Mitch Hendricks had 14 to lead 11 players in the scoring column. Cymbulak had 12 to pace the losers.

The B Team is now 5-3 on the year.

The freshmen remained winless, falling 61-55 after trailing 33-25 at the break.Billy Baumgartner was high with 14. Austin Kovach added 13. Alex Gaike hit 22 and Brett Balage 18 for Crookston.
