Jacks begin the new season with 6-1 victory over Perham
The Bemidji boys tennis team opened its season on a positive note Thursday as the Lumberjacks downed Perham 6-1 at the high school courts.
"It's always good when the weather cooperates and you get a victory," said BHS coach Scott Engelstad." It was good to get outside and play a match and the win allowed us to start the season with a positive mind set."
Bemidji swept the doubles and captured three of the four singles matches, all in straight sets.
Ben Holter was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at first singles while Adam Holter posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second and Kyle Fodness a 6-0, 6-1 win at third.
Zach Hewitt dropped his fourth singles match 6-1, 6-4.
Justin Byers and Levi Rickert earned a 6-0, 6-1 verdict at first doubles and the tandem of Ben Kloha and Joey Wood cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at second.
In third doubles play, Jack Boyer and Hayden Byers posted a 6-0, 6-3 triumph.
Bemidji returns to action Tuesday at Crookston and Engelstad will probably reshape his lineup against the Pirates.
"We have some inexperience so it is hard to know what to expect from everybody," the coach said. "This is the time to try different lineups to look for better match-ups against different teams.
"Thursday was an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and now we will build upon what we learned."
