It's now a winter storm warning for the Bemidji area; more than 6 inches of snow possible through the weekend

The National Weather Service has upgraded its forecast and has issued a winter storm warning for snow and freezing rain in the Bemidji area from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.

A mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain will develop Friday night. Periods of snow will continue Saturday into Sunday night. North winds will increase, causing near blizzard conditions in open area Sunday night into early Monday.

Ice accumulations of up to a quarter inch are possible tonight into early Saturday. The heaviest ice accumulations are expected over extreme southeast North Dakota into west-central Minnesota.

Snow totals for the entire event are expected to be 6 inches or more, with up to a foot of snow expected across the northern Red River Valley.

Today: Cloudy, with a high near 29. East southeast wind around 14 mph.

This Afternoon: A chance of snow showers and freezing drizzle. Cloudy, with a high near 30. East southeast wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tonight: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 25. East southeast wind between 14 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Saturday: Snow. High near 32. East southeast wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Saturday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 28. East northeast wind between 5 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 30. North northwest wind between 8 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy and blustery, with a low around 15. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 18.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 1.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 10.
