The deadline for entering this year's IDEA Competition has been extended to Dec. 31.

Since its inception two years ago, the competition has built a reputation for helping local innovators in bringing new products and services to market. The competition awards up to five $10,000 prizes each year to winning ideas.

The purpose of the competition is to assist the most promising local entrepreneurs in the commercialization of innovative products, processes and deliveries by connecting them to the best resources available along with access to the capitol it takes to launch a successful venture.

More than $90,000 has been awarded to date, helping local innovators with product engineering, patent filing costs, market feasibility studies, website development, and other development costs.

IDEA Competition Project Coordinator Michelle Landsverk said the competition is unique.

"There are a lot of business plan competitions and a lot of invention competitions out there," she said. "We're looking for people with good ideas and a solid plan for turning those ideas into profitable businesses here in Northwest Minnesota."

Innovators interested in entering the competition need to begin the process by going to the IDEA website at www.ideacompetition.org. Applications will not be accepted after the Dec. 31 deadline.

IDEA has been made possible by the financial contributions of the following: 360-degree Manufacturing and Applied Engineering Center of Excellence, Blandin Foundation, Bremer Banks of Crookston and Warren, Midwest Minnesota Community Development Corporation, Northwest Minnesota Foundation, Northwest Regional Small Business Development Center, and University of Minnesota, Crookston.

The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is a charitable foundation committed to improving the quality of the places in twelve counties of northwest Minnesota by investing resources, creating opportunities and promoting philanthropy.
