MANKATO – Dermaine Crockrell’s career-high 29 points led the Bemidji State mens basketball team to a 82-74 upset win over No. 5 Minnesota State Friday in Mankato.

Crockrell scored 22 of the Beavers 51 points in the second half.

The Beavers (12-9 10-7 NSIC) trailed 36-31 at halftime but quickly took the lead with 3-pointers from Crockrell and Zach Noreen.

Crockrell made four three-pointers and added a team-high eight rebounds while dishing out five assists.

Baskets from Michael Farrington, Mason Walters and Crockrell fueled a 7-0 run that gave the Beavers their first double-digit lead of the game at 59-48 with 11:57 left to play.

BSU maintained its double-digit lead for next eight minutes until Gage Wooten sunk a pair of free throws and Connor O’Brien made a tip in to cut the lead to five points at 72-67 with 3:35 remaining.

Walters and Crockrell combined for six points in the next minute and a half to build the lead back to ten points with less than two minutes left.

The Mavericks (18-3, 14-3 NSIC) were able to cut their deficit to six points, but could not get any closer as the Beavers held on for the win.

Wooten led the Mavericks with 19 points on 7-12 shooting. O’Brien posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

After MSU took the early lead, Crockrell scored seven straight points—his only points of the first half—for the Beavers to grab a 14-13 lead with 11:55 remaining in the first half.

The teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes until the Mavericks finished the half on a 11-4 run to build a 36-31 halftime lead.

BSU regained the lead in the opening minutes of the second half thanks to three-pointers from Noreen and Crockrell.

Walters scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half and made eight of his 14 shot attempts.

The win is the third straight for BSU, tying its longest winning streak of the season.

Jake Schalow contributed ten points in 16 minutes off the bench for BSU.

Lance Rongstad scored eight points and led the team with seven assists and five steals.

BSU will look to extend its winning streak against Concordia-St. Paul at 6 p.m. tonight.
