Authorities identify man who died in fiery crash on Interstate 29 south of Grand Forks

Howard Arthur Broughton, 85, of Benedict, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at St. Joseph's Area Health Services in Park Rapids.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Laporte with the Rev. Warren Broughton officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Dennis Funeral Home in Walker and one hour prior to service at the church. Military Honors and burial will follow services in Lakeport Cemetery in Laporte.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1923, to Ole and Margaret (Strand) Broughton in Benedict. He lived his entire life in the home that he was born in, and attended a one room school in Benedict until the eighth grade.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, served in Patton's Third Army and was also the recipient of a Purple Heart from injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge.

Following his time in the service, he returned home and on May 20, 1949, he married Gladys Vivian Olson, whom he had met at a dance in Guthrie. He had a variety of jobs through the years, his last employment being with the U.S. Forest Service.

He enjoyed music, playing a variety of different instruments and fishing. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Laporte.

He is survived by his sons, Dale (Karla) Broughton of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Lyle (Eileen) Broughton of Verndale, Minn.; five grandchildren; and sister, Mary Ellen Mann of Laporte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and brother, Gaylord.
