Hoops and Hilarity: World-famous Harlem Globetrotters to play Sanford Center
Bemidji may be best known as a hockey town and the Sanford Center best known as home to the BSU Beavers, but come Wednesday, basketball will take center stage, or should we say, center court.
The world-famous Harlem Globetrotters are coming to Bemidji as part of the team’s 2014 “Fans Rule” World Tour. Started in 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters have entertained millions of fans through the years with their blend of family friendly entertainment and top-notch basketball skills. Among notable players who have donned the Globetrotter jersey over the years are Wilt Chamberlain, Curly Neal and Connie Hawkins. Among current players expected to take part in the Bemidji event are Big Easy Lofton, TNT Maddox, Scooter Christensen, Stretch Middleton and Thunder Law.
A new twist on the Globetrotter tour this year is that fans can choose how the “game” will be played, according to a press release from the team. The fan options include:
•Hot Hand Jersey — A player wearing this jersey gets double the points when scoring.
•Make or Miss — The quarter starts with 2 players on each team. When a team scores, a teammate may enter the court. When they miss, a teammate must leave the court.
•Trick Shot Challenge — The teams challenge each other to make trick shots, with 5 points awarded to a team the makes a trick shot, and 5 points given to the opposition if the shot is missed.
Doors at the Sanford Center open at 7 p.m. There is a $15 Magic Pass Pre-Game event scheduled for 5:30 p.m. where people can spend time on the court with the Globetrotters. Other tickets are priced from $20 to $66, according to the release. Tickets are now available at harlemglobetrotters.com, www.ticketmaster.com, the Sanford Center box office or by phone at (800) 745-3000.
