BEMIDJI -- Bemidji’s Nameless Coalition for the Homeless is solidifying its mission with a newly developed holding fund at First National Bank of Bemidji.

In order to move the holding fund forward, the coalition will be hosting a week-long telethon on UpStream TV. The Nameless Coalition’s Telethon for the Homeless began Friday night at 7 p.m. and continues through next Friday. The final presentation will conclude at 7 p.m.

Nameless Coalition for the Homeless chairman Mike Bredon said the goal is to raise $5,000.

“People should donate because we are all a part of the community,” Bredon said. “Denying that doesn’t just adversely affect the homeless, but the hearts and pocketbooks of us all.”

Bredon said the amount of taxpayer dollars used to pay for trips made by the police to the emergency room, Peoples Church or jail can be drastically reduced by supporting the coalition.

“Bemidji can rise to the occasion, bring ourselves closer together and save lives by financially supporting help for those in need,” Bredon said.

Proceeds from the telethon will be deposited directly into a community fund which requires $5,000 of non-tax-deductible donations. Bredon said a group of seven people from the coalition will act as the board that oversees utilization of the funds. The first priority, Bredon said, is establishing a detox.

“The second, will be to establish a safe day and night center for homeless individuals to go to while the community awaits the projected arrival of a premiere regional treatment and housing facility,” Bredon said. He credited Servants of Shelter, Village of Hope, Peoples Church and others with doing a lot of work to alleviate the issue of homelessness in Bemidji.

The telethon can be viewed on UpStream TV, channel 18 on Midcontinent and Paul Bunyan Television. To donate during the telethon, call (218) 333-0733. Checks can be made out to “The Nameless Coalition” and delivered to a First National Bank of Bemidji branch during the telethon or anytime after.

“The Nameless Coalition for the Homeless is, at this time, acting as the catalyst that will move us towards the final goal which is to provide adequate shelter to those who find themselves without homes to go to,” Bredon said.

The Nameless Coalition for the Homeless meets every other Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Brigid’s Pub in Bemidji. The next meeting is April 7.
