BEMIDJI — Police have released the name of a man who was found dead at Nymore Beach Friday.

Adelbert James Ryan, 63, was a homeless man known on the streets of Bemidji as “Butch,” according to police. His body was found by two children Friday afternoon, half-submerged in Lake Bemidji on the shore of Nymore Beach.

An autopsy was performed Monday, according to Lori Thompson with the Beltrami County Coroner’s Office, but a cause of death has not been released. Thompson said autopsy results could take up to two weeks to be made public.

Bemidji Police Chief Mike Mastin said Friday that Ryan’s death is not under investigation as a homicide, and that “nothing obvious” was found on or near Ryan that would lead police to suspect foul play.

Ryan is a native of Red Lake, according to William Casey, a homeless man who stays at Peoples Church. Casey said Monday that Ryan has been living on the streets of Bemidji for many years.
