COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Rylan Schwartz scored two goals – including the game-winner late in the second period – to lift Colorado College past Bemidji State 3-2 Friday night here in WCHA action.
“I thought it was a good hockey game,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore said. “We had our opportunities, we just didn’t convert. We have nothing to feel bad about.”
The Beavers (2-2-1, 1-1-1 WCHA) played catch-up for most of the game.
Schwartz powered the Tigers (6-3, 3-0 WCHA) early. Just two minutes into the game, the senior found room between the pads of BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh, poking the puck through the five-hole to give CC the 1-0 lead.
BSU answered a few minutes later.
Jordan George tied the game at the 6:24 mark. George, positioned at the high slot, collected a rebound on a shot from Beaver captain Ben Kinne and found room past Tigers goaltender Josh Thorimbert to tie the game at 1-1.
The Tigers took another lead 15 minutes into the first.
Scott Winkler took a shot but Walsh didn’t seem to know where the puck was. It tricked past him, giving CC a 2-1 lead.
BSU took advantage of a power play to tie the game at the 18:18 mark.
After referees whistled CC defenseman Eamonn McDermott for hooking, the Beavers didn’t waste any time.
Only eight seconds into the man-advantage, Danny Mattson scored his first goal of the season to tie it up at 2-2.
Neither team had many opportunities in the second period, but the Tigers scored at the 16:19 mark with Schwartz’s second tally.
The Beavers had a great opportunity on the power play to start the third frame. CC’s Ian Young was called for a penalty after the horn sounded in the second, giving BSU a 5-on-4 to start the third. But the Beavers only got one shot on the power play and couldn’t score.
BSU had some great scoring chances at the end of the game, including a furious final minute with an extra attacker. But Thorimbert made some big-league saves and the Tigers held on for the win.
Walsh took the loss for the Beavers, making 23 saves on 26 shots. Thorimbert also made 23 saves for the Tigers, who outshot the Beavers 26-25.
