Despite being outshot 46-21, the Beavers (0-1-1) relied on a big game from goaltender Andrew Walsh — who made 44 saves — and solid penalty killing to earn the tie after losing 3-2 in Friday night’s series opener.

BSU went to the penalty box six times but went 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

It was BSU’s final penalty, however, that led to the game-tying goal.

The Huskies (1-0-1) scored both goals in the third period, including Kevin Gravel’s early tally.

Midway through the period, Markus Gerbrandt was whistled a trip at the 8 minute, 10 second, mark of the third. St. Cloud took advantage when Nic Dowd redirected a Jonny Brodzinski pass in from about 10 feet out of Walsh to tie the game at 2-2.

The Beavers had a chance to win the game late when St. Cloud’s Tim Daly was called for a holding penalty at 19:12. BSU had a pair of shots before the horn sounded for regulation and another two in the overtime period but couldn’t convert; in all BSU went 0-for-4 on the power play.

BSU settled for a 2-2 tie and won a shootout; however, the shootout has no bearing on the standings and more was an experiment for the Huskies, as they will be using them in the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Brewer’s goal in the first period helped BSU draw first blood with 3:06 to go. The sophomore from Cambridge, Ontario, redirected a Graeme McCormack shot up and over the glove hand of St. Cloud’s freshman goaltender, Charlie Lindgren. That gave BSU its first lead of the season.

In the second period the Beavers had to kill off 1:17 of penalty time to start the frame but did so successfully.

Later, freshman Nate Arentz scored his first career collegiate goal after St. Cloud’s Ethan Prow missed a shot on the other end.

Brewer picked up the puck, raced up the ice and hit Arentz at the blue line. Arentz was all alone on the breakaway and beat Lindgren glove side with a pair of nifty dekes.

St. Cloud got back into the game early in the third period, when Gravel went coast-to-coast to beat Walsh at 2:02.

Lindgren made 19 saves for the Huskies, who came into the series ranked No. 9 in both national hockey polls.

The Beavers return to the ice next weekend for their home opener. They’ll face instate rivals Minnesota Friday and Saturday at the Sanford Center.
