Medication Therapy Management is a service that is offered by pharmacies educating customers so they're more likely to take medications and get better results. While pharmacists in different settings may provide different types of medication therapy management services, the goal of all pharmacists providing medication therapy management is to make sure that the medication is right for the patient and his or her health conditions and that the best possible outcomes from treatment are achieved.

MTM is provided by an experienced pharmacist. A pharmacist will meet with you one-on-one to review all of your medications (prescription, over-the-counter, herbal and nutritional) to ensure that your current drug therapy is both safe and effective. MTM is important because managing your health becomes more difficult if you are taking more than one kind of medication.

You may ask:

E Why am I taking these medications?

E Are my medications working the way they should?

E Can I do anything about the side effects?

E Am I taking them in the right order and at the right time of day?

E Are my medications really making me feel better?

E How are my medications affecting my blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar?

A pharmacist can help make sure that:

E You are taking only the medication you need.

E You are taking the correct amount of medicine at the right time.

E Your medications are not interacting with each other.

E Any vitamins, supplements or over-the-counter drugs you are taking are safe and effective.

E You are not spending more than you need for your medications.

Some insurance plans cover MTM service. MTM is a covered service through Medicare and some state Medicaid programs.

If you or a loved one is on multiple medications, talk to a pharmacist to see if this is a service that will be beneficial.
