In the spirit of the Holiday Season, we at Active Living Bemidji would like to thank our wonderful partners and supportive community who have been passionate about creating a more healthy and active Bemidji Area.
The real impact of active living in our community has been a product of the efforts that we, as staff, aren't involved with. Many of our partners have served as champions of our active living vision by implementing a variety of programs, promotions, and initiatives. This includes the installation of a bike rack in a significant parking spot in downtown Bemidji, Share the Road signs and designated bike lanes along key bicycle routes, "active" programs and promotions, and the completion of the Paul Bunyan Trail that now provides significant connection from Brainerd to Bemidji.
Active Living in Bemidji over the past year has moved from a cool and interesting initiative to a movement that cannot be ignored. Community members, local businesses, and a variety of other organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of health, wellness and equity among all modes of transportation and have made these initiatives a priority in our community.
Active Living is excited for an even bigger year in 2011, as we tackle our "big rocks" which include the following:
-- Secure formal adoption of the edits to the "Land Use and Transportation Plans" for the Greater Bemidji Area Joint Planning Board.
-- Develop a Complete Streets Policy for the City of Bemidji.U
-- Update the City of Bemidji Parks, Trails, and Open Space Plan.
-- Complete a "Top 30 Destinations for Bicycles" project, which will include a community survey, mapping of destinations, and a partnership with the local arts community to develop artistic bike racks.
Thank you for a great year in active living! It is truly rewarding to work on this initiative in our community!
