Head-on crash claims motorcyclist

PINE RIVER -- A motorcyclist was killed about 6 p.m. Saturday south of here in a head-on collision.

The driver, John C. Hubers, 51, of Oak Grove, Minn., was listed critical condition and a passenger on the 2001 Harley Davidson Roadster was pronounced dead, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The name of the fatal victim won't be released until 8 a.m. today, pending notification of relatives. Hubers suffered from multiple extremity fractures, deep lacerations on his face and possible internal injuries. He was taken to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn.

Christina J. Laine, 22, of Pine River, the driver of the 2003 Honda Civic, had no documented injuries but was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Brainerd, while her passenger, Dylan A. Laine, 25, of Pine River had no apparent injuries, the State Patrol said.

The motorcyle and the car collided head-on on state Highway 371 at 6:05 p.m. south of Pine River at Wilson's Junction, the State Patrol said.

Assisting in the crash investigation were the Cass County Sheriff's Department and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division.
