Hauser family should be allowed own freedoms

We live in a constitutional Republic where there is a rational basis for the rule of law. However, when law is interpreted in such a way by an activist judge as to become manifestly unjust and oppressive, then that law should be defied. We have a long history of civil disobedience in this country. Thomas Jefferson even said, "Dissension is the greatest form of patriotism."

Although I've never spoken to Colleen Hauser or her son and only briefly greeted her husband outside the Brown County Courthouse, I pray that God will bless her journey of dissent and sanctuary. She is a true hero, willing to risk incarceration for the health and well-being of her son. Oh, that we had more women of her caliber and character today. Few women today know the kind of love for their children which Colleen, who serves the triune God of heaven, has for Daniel. If Daniel is forced to undergo chemotherapy, it will be a travesty.

In 2007 Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine signed into law legislation giving teenagers and their parents the right to refuse doctor-recommended treatments for life-threatening ailments. "Abraham's Law" arose from the case of Starchild Abraham Cherrix, a teenager from Chincoteague. Cherrix and his parents chose alternative therapy for his Hodgkin's disease and waged a successful court battle in Virginia against state officials who tried to force him to endure chemotherapy for his Hodgkin's disease. He was so sickened by three months of chemotherapy in 2005, that he refused a more intensive round when his cancer returned and started drinking an herbal mix from a Mexico clinic. The tonic, called the Hoxsey method, is banned from sale in the United States, and the American Cancer Society says there is no proof that it works. Today his blood tests show that he is cancer free.

In the Brown County Courtroom on Tuesday, Sleepy Eye physician James Joyce testified that he believes Daniel's cancer is back to where it was before that round of chemo he was coerced into receiving in January, but one has to wonder if there isn't an external reason for any relapse. Not one of the eight attorneys in the courtroom that day asked Dr. Joyce if the cancer could have been negatively affected by all the unjustifiable stress the judge, the attorneys, the court appointed social-worker, and Brown County have subjected Daniel to.
