Harold Van de Streek

Harold Van de Streek, 68, of Perham, died Friday, January 9, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Harold Van de Streek was born the son of Egbert and Effie (Stovengde) Van de Streek on Aug. 29, 1940 in Pennington County, Black River Township. He was baptized at Tarna Lutheran Church in St. Hilaire, Minn., and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Harold went to school in St. Hilaire until the eighth grade, and then to Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. He entered the U.S. Army in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Harold married Karen Mosbeck in 1962 and to this union, three sons were born: Jeff, Tim, and Bruce. He later married Marcheta Cummings and to this union was born a daughter, Amy.

Harold was employed at Consumer Co-op and also for School District 564, as lead man in maintenance. In 1976, Harold, Marcheta and the family moved to Perham, where Harold purchased Perham Auto Wrecking, which he continued to own and operate until the time of his death.

Harold belonged to Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham and was a proud member of the Lakes Lions in Perham. In 2008, Harold received the Helen Keller Award, which he was so honored to have gotten. He volunteered at many benefits as a Thrivent member for Lutherans, where they nicknamed him, "The Sausage Man." He loved collecting rocks and shells on his and Marky's many travels. Harold also helped to build a house in Jamaica with Mission Jamaica.

Harold's greatest treasure was his family and grandchildren, and spending time with family and friends at the cabin on Marian Lake. He loved his fishing trips to Canada with his son, Jeff, and son-in-law, Jed, over the last few years. Harold was a loving, caring grandpa and his grandchildren meant the world to him.

Surviving Harold are his wife, Marcheta "Marky" Van de Streek of Perham; one son, Jeff (Diane) Van de Streek of Detroit Lakes; a daughter, Amy (Jed) Nelson of Thief River Falls; daughter-in-law, Sue Van de Streek of Ottertail; 16 grandchildren; adopted families, Kenny and Jackie Altstad of Perham, Jerry and Brenda Dewar of Perham and Keith and Stacey Hovelson of Audubon; and siblings, Mildred Robinson, Dorothy Moorhouse, Edward Van de Streek, Ruth Roos, June Jorgenson, Barb Nelson and Muriel Waura.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents; two sons, Bruce Van de Streek (December 1983) and Tim Van de Streek (December 2002); sister, Evelynn Swanson; and in-laws, Elton and Evelynn Cummings and Richard and Mabel Mosbeck.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Tuesday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Perham, with the Rev. Phil Holtan officiating. Burial was in the Perham Village Cemetery following services.
